Chapter Eight

Phoenix

Over the next two months, Phoenix visited Ash as often as possible. Something had shifted since their night in the trailer, and although Phoenix hadn’t stayed over since, they had kissed more often. It was the longest amount of time Phoenix had spent with someone, much less someone she wasn’t having sex with, and yet she couldn’t help herself. She loved being around Ash. Once Ash had got her car back, she’d taken to tagging along with Phoenix, occasionally helping her out on jobs, Chance always in tow.

Chance was also growing, still not quite old enough to be neutered or vaccinated which restricted where he could go and what he could do. It had taken a lot of convincing for Ash to leave the pup behind, but her parents had promised to look after him while she was gone. Deacon had confessed that he was quite looking forward to some alone time with the puppy, especially because he was now big enough to be a little more exciting.

When Ash had finally agreed to go away with her for the weekend, Phoenix had been a mix of surprised and nervous. Although, it wouldn’t be just the two of them. The family hunting trip was coming up and Phoenix had asked Ash to come with her, making good on her promise to take her hunting. Once Chance was taken care of, Ash was happy to come alone and the tear between Phoenix and the dog seemed somehow lessened.

She liked that Ash was as sappy as she was. Phoenix had noticed Ash getting touchier with her, but Phoenix still wanted to take things incredibly slowly, wanting to make sure Ash was totally ready before the progressed any further. She understood how much pressure there was to have sex, especially if you were being romantic with someone and the two of them were definitely being romantic. Aside from the lack of sex, it was just like any other relationship. Except Phoenix was actually enjoying herself and relaxing.

She genuinely enjoyed spending time with Ash, holding her hand and just getting to know her. Every time they kissed, Phoenix’s body felt like it was on fire, a fierce ache spreading from between her legs, across her abdomen as she forced herself not to push too fast. Besides, no matter what Ash said, she wasn’t entirely convinced that her family would forgive her if she fucked this up.

Hurting Ash was the last thing she wanted to do, but Phoenix wasn’t exactly great at relationships. There was still so much she was unsure of, and so much she worried about. The niggling screams of her mother always seemed to pop up at the most inopportune times. It’s amazing just how deeply your family’s homophobic bullshit can fuck you up. Before Phoenix had come out, she and her mother had been close. More accurately, a version of her and her mother had been close. The problem was that Phoenix had liked that closeness, which only added to the sting of her abandonment.
